When you hear the word, "cheerleader," what do you think of? Most of us imagine women (and men) in matching uniforms with pom poms jumping up and down. But when did that become the image for cheerleaders? In the early 1960's, cheerleading began evolving from a vocal chant to a physical activity. Acrobatic tricks were integrated into routines proving a need for durable uniforms. Sweaters and long skirts transformed into tight spandex vests and short skirts.

Apart from the Keds, cheerleading fashion is the same today as it was in the 1980/1990s.

The pride cheerleaders have is displayed through their uniforms. Typical uniforms include the school's logo proudly displayed on the front, and school colors.

What does your image of a cheerleader look like? Let us know!
